Job Title: Hydroponics Training Assistant

Reports To: Program Director (Site Coordinator)

Job Summary

The Hydroponics Trainer Assistant is a part-time position that offers critical knowledge to students in NYC public schools. The Hydroponics Training Assistant leads hydroponics classes, while providing invaluable skills to the students. The Hydroponics Training Assistant acts as a resource person, acting directly with the students in providing technical assistance using hydroponics knowledge through the application of Hydroponics Systems.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Assistant will be responsible for, but not limited to the following:

  • Providing and facilitate high-quality purposeful activities that foster the development of new skills (problem-solving, decision making, interpersonal competence, etc.) and values in ren.
  • Develop and implement project-based and theme-based lesson plans and activities in the area of specific expertise that will enrich academic learning, as well as foster and develop students ‘social and emotional skills to achieve motivation and a growth mindset.
  • Plan and facilitate 2-3 hydroponics-based educational classes per week as well as foster and develop students’ social and emotional skills.
  • Provide supervision and ensure safety of students at all times.
  • Engage with students in a supportive manner and aids in bringing excitement to the activities related to mastery of hydroponic growing methods.
  • In conjunction with Program Director (Site Coordinator), develop appropriate lesson plans, as well as submit weekly activity lesson plans.
  • Prepare for garden activities ensuring you have everything needed for the class in advance.
  • Setup and cleanup workshop materials.
  • Maintain accurate attendance, evaluations, records and incident reports as required.
  • Provide opportunities for students to showcase work.
  • Build involvement in and commitment to the hydroponics project within the school community, including teachers, administrators, students, and parents.
  • Monitor, document, and report on all activities about the Hydroponics program, including harvest log, garden activity log, and garden plan, garden map, and surveys to document student daily progress.
  • Coordinate if it is possible to community garden events to bring students, families, teachers, and community members together.
  • Work collaboratively and maintain effective communication with the School Program Director and Program Director (Site Coordinator).
  • Uphold program policies, procedures, and proper use of supplies and materials.
  • Attend staff meetings and professional development workshops.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by Program Director (Site Coordinator).
  • Work closely with staff and leaders to support high-quality programs that are responsive to students and families
  • Follow schedule provided by the Program Director (Site Coordinator)
  • Communicate with students, parents, SoBro staff and program stakeholders in a polite and respectful manner
  • Present as a mentor/role model to SoBro students by modeling appropriate behavior and professionalism at all times

Qualifications and Other Responsibilities:
Education and Training: Minimum academic and technical qualifications needed.

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • Associates’ degree in development, elementary/secondary education, physical education, recreation or a related field; Bachelors’ degree preferred
  • Two years direct experience working with ren under the age of 13 years
  • Experience working with under-served populations and in after-school settings
  • Exceptional interpersonal, and superior written and oral communication skills
  • Exceptional group management, problem-solving and conflict resolution skills
  • Must have the ability to demonstrate and/or show competency in the following areas of Youth Development principles and social-emotional learning activities
  • Ability to create interactive academic and/or enrichment activities that are age-appropriate
  • Ability to make sound decisions to secure the safety and wellbeing of all program participants.
  • Knowledge of NYC DOH/OCFS Part 414 regulations, DOE’s Chancellor’s Regulations and Common Core Standards
  • Strong organizational, oral and written communication skills, including public speaking skills, writing, grammar, punctuation, and oral communication.
  • Must have State Central Review (SCR) and Criminal Background clearance prior to employment, as well as maintaining background clearance throughout employment
  • Must have Medical Clearance within two weeks of employment
  • Knowledge and skills in small-scale organic food production, hydroponic gardening or home gardening.

Hours

  • School-Year- Monday-Friday, 3:00 p.m. through 6:00 p.m., 15 hours per week
  • Holidays, School Breaks and Summer Day Camps- Monday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. through 6:00 p.m. (Hours are flexible; two shifts; 8am to 1pm and/or 6pm)
  • Occasional weekend and evening hours
